Emma L.R. Hogg is a Canadian novelist, filmmaker, and playwright. After graduating from the University of Guelph, she began writing her debut novel which would become Mercedes Mudd, published three years later in 2006.
Following Mercedes Mudd, Emma released a series of acclaimed works, including Pitlin and Swoosh (2009), The Passenger’s Muse (2011), Portraits of Margot (2013), The Fourth Wall (2015), the non-fiction collection 100: 1 Writer’s Journey, 100 Musings (2016), and Winona Rising (2018). Her seventh novel, Picket Fences, was published by Tidewater Press in 2020.
The Fourth Wall and Winona Rising were both shortlisted for the Whistler Independent Book Award for Fiction in 2017 and 2018, respectively, with Winona Rising earning a spot as a finalist.
Emma’s poetry has appeared in Carousel magazine, and her short story “In a Room with the People Who Love You” was published in an anthology by Type A Media.
In addition to her literary work, Emma is an accomplished writer and director of short films, many of which have been recognized at film festivals across North America. Her films have screened and earned accolades at the Canada Shorts Film Festival, ALTFF Alternative Film Festival, Grand River Film Festival, Her Vision Film Festival, Comox Valley International Film Festival, Routes to Roots Film Festival, Nevada Women’s Film Festival, Soo Film Festival, Vox Popular Media Arts Festival, Sudbury's Tiny Underground Film Festival, Central Alberta Film Festival, Sault Film Festival, Couch Film Festival, Vivid Arts Festival, GreenScreen Film Festival, Austin Micro Film Festival, Rocket City Short Film Festival, and the Hamilton Film Festival.
She is currently in pre-production for her next short film and is actively working on her next novel.
In 2025, Emma’s debut stage play, Love is Not a Jellyfish, premiered to audiences, marking another creative milestone in her diverse storytelling career.
